Char-Broil have become known in the home grill market for their innovative designs and high cooking standards. So when I heard about their new Char-Broil Classic 40,000 BTU 4-Burner Gas Grill with Side Burner, I was intrigued to find out whether they had carried on in this vain. As luck had it, just a few weeks later, I was able to get my hands on one, and put it to the test.

The measurements are 56 inches in length by 21 inches width and a 45 inch height. It’s a rather large grill, which weighs 114 pounds, so you may wish to have somebody else with you to help get it outside into the backyard. It has wheels but still wheeling along 114 pounds is no easy task. Having said this, you don’t really want a grill to be light in weight, because that usually means a cheap and flimsy product. The Char-Broil Classic looks and feels like time and effort has been put into it’s construction, and it really does have a Classic look about it. It looks like one of those grills from the 1950’s in its stylish composition and sleek exterior. A very impressive looking grill indeed.
I tested the performance of the Char-Broil Classic 40,000 BTU 4-Burner Gas Grill with Side Burner, and I’m going to start with the cleaning. Most people find it difficult to clean outdoor grills, so commonly they’re left to accumulate dirt before being given a long clean usually once month, depending on how often they’re used. A consequence of this is a lowering of food quality as residue builds up at the bottom and meat begins to taste like charcoal. The Char-Broil Classic, however, makes cleaning a 5 minute job, because it’s cast Iron coated with porcelain so can be wiped clean very easily.
The set-up was easy too, although it takes around an hour, it’s very straightforward and you only have to do it once. I can’t see anybody having a problem putting this thing together. Once you have it set-up the 4 main burners can be lit using the electronic ignition, which removes the need for matches and increases safety. Having flipped the ignition switch, the burners all heat up evenly which is a promising start as I’ve tested grills where annoyingly one or two burners seemed to be hotter than the others. The cooking surface is incredibly large at 480 square inches and theres a handy swing away for more room. I was cooking for 20 people and didn’t even need the swing away but it gave me peace of mind to know I had it.
The side burner isn’t as powerful as the main burners which are all 40,000 BTU. The side burner is 10,000 BTU, but it’s intended for heating sauces, or keeping already cooked food hot, so in this way it was a welcome addition. Since almost everyone likes to have a sauce of some kind with their food, the side burner for most purchasers will become indispensable. The design includes a top shelf, just above the four main burners, which can be used to cooking corn and other vegetables. There are also 2 side shelves for even more room and you can place your meat here, ready to go onto the burners.
The only real problem with the Char-Broil Classic is that it can sometimes catch fire at the bottom, but this does not happen often and once you’ve tasted the food cooked on it, you won’t consider that a major problem.
The price is just under $400 and when you receive the item, you’ll wonder how they kept the price so low. This is 114 pounds in weight, with quality workmanship, durable design and provides plenty of room for whatever the buyer wants to cook on it. The food tastes great, it’s easy to clean, and the electronic ignition is convenient and safe. The Char-Broil Classic should last a very long time and will consistently produce great tasting food, so it’s well worth the money. Infact, I like it so much that I’ve included it in my list of the best gas grills currently available.
